Nina Berman

Professor, Columbia Journalism School

Nina Berman is a documentary photographer, filmmaker and professor at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Her work explores American politics, militarism, environmental issues and post violence trauma. She is the author of Purple Hearts – Back from Iraq, (2004) Homeland, (2008) and An autobiography of Miss Wish (2017). Awards and grants include: the World Press Photo Foundation, Pictures of the Year International, the Open Society Foundation and the MIT Knight Science Journalism Fellowship.

Her work has been exhibited at more than 100 international venues and is included in the collections at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, the Harvard Art Museums and the Bibliothèque nationale de France among others. Recent work includes Fallout a documentary she co-directed about the US nuclear arsenal which won a 2024 Telly award. Her photographs of the Gaza solidarity encampment at Columbia were published as a portfolio in the New Yorker in May 2024.
