Anna Oakes

Journalist, Graduate Student, Columbia Journalism School

Anna Oakes is a freelance journalist and graduate student at Columbia Journalism School. She was born in New York, where she has reported on migrant resettlement programs, urban toxic waste sites, and protest movements. Her work covering the Columbia student encampments was published in Rolling Stone, CTXT, The Nation, and Hell Gate.

Anna worked in Spain for two years at publications including CTXT and La Marea, where she reported on the rise of the far right and the legacies of the Franco dictatorship. Anna is the co-host and lead producer of Radiotopia's Bot Love, listed as one of The Atlantic’s best podcasts of 2023. She is currently a producer for the Berman Institute of Bioethics at Johns Hopkins University, where she is developing projects on medical ethics in conflict zones, public health, and data privacy.
