Alberto Spampinato, 74, is an Italian journalist. He worked as a reporter for the daily newspaper “L’Ora” in Palermo and for the Ansa News Agency. He lives in Rome. He is one of the founders of ECPMF. He was a consultant to the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, AGcom and the Parliamentary Anti-Mafia Commission on the subject of violations of freedom of the press committed with violence and abuse, and also about the protection of journalists.

His older brother, Giovanni Spampinato, was killed by the mafia in Sicily in 1972 because of his investigative work. In his memory, Alberto founded, together with other journalists, the NGO “Ossigeno per l’Informazione”. This observatory documented 7,200 threats to Italian journalists, helped hundreds of them to resist and defend themselves from specious legal actions and provided documents for two parliamentary inquiries into threats to journalists, provided reports to UNESCO, UE Commission, AGcom, Italian Parliament.
