Women at the helm of journalism: Truth and fiction

Although women make up 40% of journalists globally, they occupy just a quarter of top newsroom positions, according to the Reuters Institute. Those who do reach leadership often face lower pay, greater psychological strain, and disproportionate levels of online harassment. UNESCO’s 2021 report underscores that female journalists are not only prime targets of online abuse but also the first to confront it.

This panel brings together women who lead prominent independent media outlets to examine the lived realities of newsroom leadership today. How do they navigate gender biases, intense scrutiny, and the rising hostility towards women in the profession?

The discussion will explore what meaningful structural changes are needed to create a media landscape where leadership is not only equitable but also resilient in the face of growing challenges.
