Agenda
This practical, hands-on workshop will show how frontline media can use cost-effective drones, sensors and satellite/space imagery to collect field data that drives hard-hitting journalism. Attendees will leave with an expanded toolbox and concrete strategies – as well as inspiration – for using tech to strengthen reporting on climate issues, hidden inequalities and more.
The workshop comes at a time when journalists must be more enterprising to find accurate and actionable data – as official sources for climate and other environmental data, plus frontline information providers, are defunded in the wake of the major policy changes sweeping North America and Europe.
The workshop is hosted by Code for Africa, the continent’s largest civic technology network, and ICFJ+, a new organization created by CfA, ICFJ and systems builder PROTO that is focused on building stronger, more effective news and information ecosystems worldwide.
In addition to learning how to integrate sensor and drone data into investigative storytelling, participants will see real-world examples from across Africa, where CfA has helped journalists expose pollution, inform public policy, and power legal action through its sensors.AFRICA and african.DRONE initiatives.
The workshop is geared toward participants who have no prior experience with these tools.
