"Unaliving" language online: How modern journalism decodes "algospeak"

In an era of social media, journalists face an invisible but powerful filter: the algorithm. To avoid content suppression, online communities have developed algospeak, a coded language that replaces sensitive terms with safer alternatives. “Unalive” instead of “dead.” “Corn” for “porn.” “Dior bags” for drones. Even viral trends like the “cute winter boots” TikTok meme (read: ICE raids) show how language is being playfully - but strategically - manipulated to sidestep moderation. While these workarounds can boost reach on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, they also raise ethical questions for journalists: When, why, and how should we adapt our language?

This session explores the rise of algospeak and what it means for journalism. We’ll unpack how algorithmic moderation affects the newsgathering and distribution of stories about mental health, sexuality, violence, and more, and how journalists can respond without compromising clarity or credibility.

Whether you're reporting on sensitive topics or trying to make your content algorithm-proof, this session offers timely guidance on navigating digital language trends in journalism.
