"There's food at home": How news publishers are enticing consumers to get news on their own platforms

From social media to streaming services to online shopping, the competition that news publishers face for audiences’ attention is only getting steeper. This 50-minute panel discussion will delve into the innovative strategies that three news publishers have implemented to engage and retain news consumers on their own platforms.

404 Media is up front with users about why it collects their email addresses and doesn’t chase clicks. The Economist built its own vertical video carousel for its homepage, inviting users to scroll through videos as they would on TikTok. El País launched El País Exprés, a brief vertical swipe-through feature that gives users the run-down on the day’s top stories.

They’ll discuss their main challenges and lessons learned in designing their products to be consumed on their own platforms, how they balance using social media and other platforms to get their journalism to new audiences, and shed light on how these on-platform products factor into their overall business and sustainability strategies.
