Investigative journalism masterclass

In the first hour of the session, Emilia Diaz-Struck will focus on the introductory principles of investigative journalism, including its definition, methodologies, and techniques no matter the medium. Some covered topics are: how to find and develop stories; how to find the right data and human sources for the investigations; using the best practices for collaborations with other journalists; maintaining high ethical standards while doing an investigation; and how to pitch a story to your supervisors and your newsroom. Successful investigations will be referred throughout the session.

In the second hour of the session, Foeke Postma will introduce advanced internet research techniques for journalists. Through case studies, participants will learn to pivot across datasets, images, names, emails, and documents to trace connections and expose wrongdoing. Participants will learn methods to find and verify public information using open sources (OSINT).
