How to make data sound

Data Sonification is the presentation of data as sound: By transforming numbers and tables into informative sounds and exciting soundscapes, data sets become audible – for podcasts, media- or art-projects.

2024 marked a groundbreaking year for data sonification: major media outlets embraced sonification in their storytelling, a Sonification Manifesto set the stage for its future and the first-ever Sonification Award celebrated innovation. With new tools, a thriving global community, and growing recognition for audio and digital journalism innovations, sonification is transforming how we experience data.

In this interactive session, participants will learn:

- The fundamentals of data sonification techniques

- How Sonification is used in media-projects

- How to create, export, and record sonifications with DataSonifyer, a free online tool or with SonicPi, a live-coding tool

By the end of the session, you’ll not only be able to recognise different types of sonification but also craft your own.

SoniFriday is a collective that explores creative ways of making data audible. It was founded by two award-winning data journalists from Germany, Berit Kruse and Christian Basl. As a duo, they have released numerous sonifications and tutorials, collaborated with major media outlets, developed and published a free sonification tool, presented their work at conferences in Germany and Belgium, and performed live at a music festival.
