Designing AI-powered news solutions with your audience in mind

As AI becomes more integrated into journalism, one key question remains: are we building tools that truly meet the needs of our audiences? This hands-on workshop offers a practical introduction to tools of product thinking for AI in journalism, guiding participants to design solutions that prioritise impact, inclusion, and usability.

Led by Ana Paula Valacco (JournalismAI) and Line Itani (Raseef22 and lead of the “Ask Aunty” project, one of the grantees of JournalismAI Innovation Challenge, supported by the Google News Initiative), the session will draw from real-world experience working with newsrooms across the Global South to create AI tools that are informed by the communities they serve.

Through interactive exercises and case studies, participants will learn how to identify user needs, prototype responsibly, and align AI solutions with both newsroom goals and audience expectations. The workshop will also touch on the ethical implications of audience-centered AI development, especially when working with underserved or sensitive communities.

Attend this session to gain a clear framework for developing solutions that are not only technically sound but also meaningful and relevant to the people who use them.
