Script-writing and editing for vertical video: How newsrooms and journalists do it
Add to my calendar

The rise of vertical video-focused platforms such as TikTok has put media outlets and journalists under pressure to learn and implement new storytelling techniques aimed at reaching audiences that are turning their back on legacy media in favour of news influencers and creators of all kinds. But what many see as a challenge can also be an opportunity to explore new angles, stories and ways to connect with our target audience for both journalists and newsrooms – and possibly even to redefine the future of the relationship between the media industry and the citizens it serves.

In this workshop, two producers and hosts for award-winning TikTok channels powered by legacy media brands will help participants tailor their scripting and video editing skills to the needs and consumption habits of vertical video audiences, as well as to develop an audience thinking framework to integrate in their reporting process. From news explainers to skits and other forms of creative native storytelling, the participants will learn how to showcase their journalism (or that of their newsroom) on TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts to produce impactful coverage and build trust among the users of these platforms, counter misinformation and foster media literacy.

*To attend this workshop participants are required to bring their own laptop.
