Social media misinformation and disinformation pose a major concern for media outlets, governments and human rights campaigners across the world. Many blame the problems that arise from fast-spreading fake news and misleading information on algorithm-driven platforms. But what if those environments we fear the most could also become a tool for journalists and the fact-checkers to counter lies, manipulated content and propaganda campaigns?
To harness their potential, though, we have to leave our comfort zone and play the TikTok (or Reels, or Shorts) game by its own rules.
In this presentation, two journalists who work full-time producing audience-focused informational pieces in native vertical video formats will guide the attendees through the main challenges that we face when trying to counter misinformation and disinformation in platforms where vertical video is king.
Carmella Boykin, from the U.S., and Enrique Anarte, born and raised in Spain but based in Germany, will share their experience and expertise as well as practical tips and strategic approaches to develop TikTok, Reels and Shorts formats that debunk fake claims and foster media literacy - both from the perspective of media brands and individual journalists. By the end of the session, attendees will have understood not only the opportunities that these platforms offer to fulfill our mission, but also the importance of trust-building a media environment where the line between fact and fiction is increasingly blurred.
